Legendary director Mike Lee returns to the modern world with a fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous exploration of family and the thorny bonds that bind us. Reuniting with Lee for the first time since the Oscar-nominated Secrets and Lies, the stunning Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman plagued by fear, tormented by suffering, and prone to furious tirades against her husband, her son, and anyone who seems to get in her way. Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister, played by Michelle Austin (Another Year), is a single mother with a life as different from Pansy’s as their conflicting temperaments—filled with the shared warmth of her salon clients and daughters. This expansive film from a master playwright introduces us to the intensity of kinship, debt, and that most enduring of human mysteries: that even through lives filled with pain and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family.
