Emilia Pérez follows four unlikely women in Mexico, each on a quest for their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia hires Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofia Gascón talks about the two-year preparation for this challenging role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality, which she had to play as Emilia and Manita. Jacques Audiard said that the idea for the musical was inspired by a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who longs for a change of identity. The first two are played by Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofia Gascón, the second by Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. This quartet in 2024. She shared the award for best actress at Cannes. They deserve it. Saldaña is a special discovery. Of the previous films by writer-director Jacques Audiard, I have seen four (The Swim My Heart Skipped, The Prophet, Rust and Bone and Siblings) in different ways. None of them prepared me for this one, so I thank him for not getting stuck in a genre rut. Emilia Perez has a lot of history and a lot of singing. When the singing is combined with Damien Jalet’s insightful choreography, the effect is thrilling. Otherwise, the songs drag the film. They are musically simple, do not delve into depth, and therefore do not meet the dramatic demands placed on them. They work best in rap-like performances where rhythm is the most important element. Emilia Pérez’s moral seems to be that we can never shake off the past, change who we are or what we want. It’s an unusually bleak vision to present it in a musical.
