Jacques Audiard’s first Spanish-language film
Line of Events
In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel leader retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he always dreamed of being. IMDb Editor-in-Chief Arno Kazarian offers quick previews of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous and oddly erotic Misericordia. A French title card misspells the Indian city as “Delhi.” Featured in Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna & Selena Shocks’s PEPPER! (2024). El TrioWritten by Camille, Clément Ducol, and Jacques AudiardStarring Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldana. I wrote this after seeing its gala screening at the London Film Festival. A wild and crazy roller coaster film that mixes crime, comedy, musical and thriller into one and succeeds brilliantly! The four actresses at the heart of the film are the force and they were directed to perfection by Audiard.
And not only that, she does it brilliantly
Karla plays her character pre and post transition as it comes naturally to her, after being underestimated in public as an actress. It’s a powerful performance that is so of our time. I am proud to be alive in a time where a trans actress is playing a trans role. The tragedy of leaving a life but the promise of the one she always needed. Zoe sings and dances and cries and laughs and everything I think an actor dreams of doing, let alone in a film. I have never seen one of her films before and I am so happy this is my first because she shines! There’s a scene where she’s in a car, and when she realizes what’s happened, she breaks down in hysterics. Think Margo in I, Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liaisons.
And she has a beautiful voice!
That scene alone should win her an Oscar. Selena, who I was most excited about seeing in this movie, stands out. She plays a mobster’s wife, that kind of icy, smoldering-under-the-surface kind of woman that I think she needs to revisit because as a young girl who has endured scrutiny and then gone through psychosis, she knows all too well what it’s like to keep the lid on for too long. The only time during the screening that I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience was when her character Jessi finally unleashes her emotions on us, the audience, after years of oppression. The agony and anger are evident in her voice. This is proof that she said acting was her true calling and how passionate she is about it. It would be foolish to think that she is still a Disney kid and has something left to prove. Her journey as an actress is truly exciting for a fan of almost 2 decades.
She is poignant!
Lastly, Adriana’s character is like the sun in the otherwise dark and twisted world that the film lives in. And she perfectly complements the work of the other 3 actresses. She brings love and sweetness to the story through her work. One important thing to note is that this film is like an opera. It is reminiscent of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was also almost entirely sung. Emotionally, it is definitely intense as such, with small moments of calm when you realize you are watching a film. The cinematography was brilliant. At the end of the film, Selena’s character is almost unconscious in the passenger seat while her lover drives angrily.
it was like a painting, very poetic but tragic
The way the camera pans from the car to his face… I’m so glad I watched it before it came out on Netflix. It’s amazing how a movie can make you feel that way. Take you out of your routine and make you a little crazy… Check out the full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
